NEW FEATURES

Tax computation

One of the major enhancements to Personal Tax Manager is the Tax Computation and detailed calculation stages reports.

The three page report is much easier to read with all the shading removed and larger text. Each page is also headed with the client name, tax reference and the tax year.

The tax computation is generated by selecting the Calculate Tax icon at the top of the screen. Once it has been generated you can also view the detailed stages of the calculation by selecting the required stage from the drop down box that is immediately above the tax computation. Closing the report will return you to the previous screen.

Residence and remittance basis

We have included the new style form within our software and also incorporated newly designed screens applying the same easy to follow on screen instructions and data entry.

Print report facility

The Print icon automatically calculates your tax liability in the background while compiling the reports.

The report generation window allows you to select which reports you would like to generate and print while giving you the facility to close the report and make a further selection without having to leave the screen. You can also attach external PDF documents and print them. Selecting Exit will close the Report Generation window and return you to the previous screen.

Sliding side docking panels – details, tax calculation summary, memo

We have improved the stability of the side docking panels to ensure they do not open unexpectedly.

Import facility

We have incorporated a more detailed import routine that covers most areas of the tax return.

Please select one of the following for further instructions on how to import and also the list of items that are not covered by the import procedure.

Areas that do not form part of the import procedure

Help files

We have updated the help files. They now display in easy to use interactive .html files.

Filing By Internet – FBI

As frequently reported, HM Revenue and Customs is gearing more towards filing by internet (FBI) so we are continuing to enhance our software.

Our software now includes a report that details the IR Mark and date of each successful submission along with the relevant details relating to the return submitted. The log and submission report can be accessed from the FBI log icon and is available for both TEST and LIVE submissions. They can be printed and saved for future reference.

When a submission is unsuccessful an error log is displayed. We have now included more detail in this error log to assist you with making a successful submission. This error log can be accessed from the FBI log icon and can be printed and saved for future reference. It's also useful for our Support Team should you require assistance.

Unfortunately, the HMRC gateway does not accept certain criteria for FBI. They have helped software developers by producing reports that identify when a return may not be accepted and the appropriate action to be taken. These reports are referred to as Exclusions and Special Cases and can be found on the FBI Tab at the top of the screen. There are reports for both personal and partnership tax returns. While we have tried to ensure that our software will comply with these restrictions, we should advise that if you are likely to be completing a return that matches the criteria as described in these reports, you may be required to file your paper return by the earlier filing deadline of 31st October.

The following reports are supported by Personal Tax Manager

SA100 and supplementary pages for individual returns
SA800 and supplementary pages for partnership returns
R40 repayment claim
FBI Declaration – front and back pages
Tax Computation supported by the detailed stages that assist in the generation of the tax liability
Internal reports for some sections of the program

Please note that our software does not support the SA200 – Short Tax Return

Printing reports

It was noted that some people experienced delays when printing certain pages. We have identified that this is due to some of the pages supplied by HM Revenue & Customs being different sizes. When printing your reports, please ensure that the page scaling setting is set to ‘shrink to printable area’ when in the printer selection window.

Please note

An Adobe PDF Reader Version 7 or higher is required to view all the Personal Tax Manager Reports.

Installation on all Windows servers

When installing the new Personal Tax Manager 2009/2010 software on the Windows Servers please ensure that you have the latest Service Pack installed. The minimum requirement for Internet Explorer is IE6 SP1.

During the installation, you may need to restart your Server/PC several times. However, this is dependant on the Server/PC setup and firewall settings.

If you require any assistance with your installation, please email support@personaltaxmanager.co.uk.

Import from Personal Tax Manager – for existing users only

Once the software has installed, the application will open in the new Main Screen for the current tax year.

The import from the previous tax year now includes most of the static data entered - for example, the descriptions and narrative entered in many of the fields within the individual sections that make up the tax return.

You have the option to import all of the clients from the previous year by selecting either the Personal Tax or Partnership Tax icon then answering YES to the 'import all data' question.

If you choose not to import all clients, we have included the facility to manually import from the previous tax year by selecting the Import icon from the globe in the top left corner of the screen then selecting the clients to be imported.

If a client that has been imported into the current tax year is then deleted, you will still be able to select that client for import again.

Setting up new clients in the previous tax year will also be available for selection to be imported into the next tax year.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are a new client for the current tax year, you will not have access to the application for previous years and the import facility will be disabled.

Please contact our sales team should you wish to buy Personal Tax Manager for last year.

Tax offices

Due to the constant reorganisations and name changes at the HMRC offices, these WILL NOT form part of the import procedure. You MUST re-visit each tax return and select the correct Tax Office from the drop down list for the tax office to appear on page 1 of the tax return.

Please also visit the Date box and accept the entry made - as this will ensure that the date will appear on Page 1 of your return.

Areas that do not form part of the import procedure

Student Loans –  if you answered 'yes' to the notification received question
Charitable Giving – any details entered in the One Off and Gifted tabs
Repayment of tax – any details entered in this section
Repayment to Charity – any details entered in this section
Other UK Income – any details entered in Life Insurance Gains, both taxed and untaxed, Gains from Voided ISA’s and Deficiency Relief
UK Investments – any details entered in Distributions
Post Cessation Receipts – any details entered in this section
Share Schemes – any details entered in this section
Other Tax Reliefs – the only entries that will import are Annuities, Qualifying Loans and Maintenance Payments.
Allowances – any details entered in this section
Other UK Income Tax Losses – losses brought forward and carried forward
Tax Avoidance Schemes – any details entered in this section
UK Property – any details entered in Chargeable and Reverse Premiums
Foreign – Land and Property losses carried forward
Capital Gains – losses carried forward
Class 4 NIC – if you answered 'yes' to the deferred/exempt question

Where losses are not imported, you must ensure they are included in the current year for reporting and FBI purposes. This is particularly important for Capital Gains where you intend to use any of the losses from the previous year to offset current year gains.

Moving from one tax year to another

The software will automatically open in the latest tax year when the application is first accessed. Once the previous tax year has been selected from the Tax Year selector window, the application will close and the application for the previous year will open. This does take a few moments and it may appear as if the software is not responding. Please give the application time to open.

Back up and restore from a client work station

When you are required to run either a back up or restore procedure from a local PC that connects to a network installation, you will need to enter a UNC Path as your location. This can either be a server name or IP address. This is because the SQL Server that stores the data will not recognise a network drive - for example F:\. If you require any assistance with this, please email support@personaltaxmanager.co.uk.

We have identified a printing issue with sections on pages 2 and 3 of the SA106 Foreign report. The areas affected are as follows:

Overseas pension

Where there are more than two entries for this section, the format of the form will only display the first 2 entries in the detailed boxes provided and boxes 8 and 9 will show the values in total. The guidance provided by HM Revenue & Customs  says that a separate schedule should be attached detailing the additional amounts received.

Personal Tax Manager will provide a breakdown of some of the information on page 6 of your tax return. However, this is not in the prescribed format.

Dividend income received by a person abroad; and
All other income received by a person abroad
The design of the form for these two sections displays one row of boxes each. However, the guidance notes do not specify how many entries could be provided to populate these boxes and how the information should be reported.

Personal Tax Manager will enter the country code of the first item in the first box of each section and the total of all other entries within each section will populate the remaining boxes. However, a detailed breakdown is not provided.

Where the above sections form part of your return, you should note the following:

  • When submitting the final tax return in paper format, you should provide a detailed schedule of the income received from each of the sources mentioned above.
  • For FBI submissions, all details are transmitted correctly so a detailed schedule is not required.
